We were born without shoes.
In fact we are born with nothing at all to cover and protect us. We are dependent beings. As babies, we were dependent on our parents for virtually
everything: food, clothing, and even to
move us from place to place. This is how
it should be once we are “born” again, when we accept Christ. Our dependence on Him should be complete, and
we should trust Him just as it was necessary for us to trust our parents when
we were babies.
Sometimes we try to be independent and proud. I remember one summer when I was about 12,
and I spend a great deal of the summer going barefoot. We went on vacation, and as vacations were in
my family we tent camped for two weeks at Wind Creek Park. I loved being free to fish and swim and roam
around the campground. My Uncle Newton
had a home built boat, and we rode behind it on a tube…not the kind we have
now, but a real inner tire tube. I
remember counting the days I had been without shoes. Somehow I had gone a barefoot for an entire
week before we went camping, and so by the time the trip was over I had not
worn shoes for a full 21 days. I felt so
totally independent, and free to do what I wanted, and was very proud of
that. The day we got home, I stepped on
a piece of glass and cut my foot. It was
pretty bad, and I had to wear a bandage for a while. I was brought back to the place of being
dependent on shoes to protect my feet.
So I am with Christ.
Sometimes I go along declaring my independence, and being very proud
that I can do things myself. Then I will
remember the Lord and know that he is my refuge, my protection and I must trust
in Him.
Psalm 91: 1-2 “He who
dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the
Almighty, I will say to the Lord, My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I
trust.”
